Is Internet Research Stifling Our Children-s Creative Abilities

Aug-31st-2011

Each era of modernization in human history was marked by a different innovation. In the 21st century it is all about connection. Technology has essentially connected every individual on the planet to every other individual. This network made something else, something much more ground shaking, to take place. And that is the exchange of ideas, knowledge, inventions, and thoughts. This innovation has sparked a revolution in the world of education. Computers are now the primary source of information and often the only research method used. Google is the leader in giving people the ability to find out anything about everything with just a click of a button and because of this the federal government now funds computers for every school all the way down to the elementary level.Want more? Click here/tag Children are now able to get ideas for projects, research background for papers and even find study aid for tests just by using the internet. Many people are concerned that this form of acquiring information is harming the development of children’s imaginations and creativity. Why would a ten year old sit and ponder a topic for his science fair projects, when by googling “science fair project ideas”, he can get list after list of all his possibilities. The concern is justified. Children now not only have information spoon fed to them through the internet at schools but now personal laptops and even phones can get the job done. Games online have taken over playing outside where kids would use their creativity to make up games and imagine up adult scenarios critical to their development. No matter what angle one looks at it, although access to the internet mean access to a new level of education, it is stifling children’s ability to think for themselves, be creative and imaginative. This is a serious problem the effects of which won’t be seen until after this generation enters adulthood.
